celebrations, holidays, May's days

Days of May

Whenever I think of May, I think of my brother’s birthday, which falls on Cinco de Mayo, my nephew’s birthday, which is the day after Mother’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day.

But May has many more recognized days, weeks, and months. Among them are Armed Forces Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

In my research for this post, I discovered that May has at least one titled celebration for each day, and many have more than one. May 1st and 8th both have eight different listed celebrations. May 3rd and 5th, have seven.

Many were funny and strangely specific, like National Grape Popsicle Day, National Dance Like a Chicken Day, National Third Shift Workers Day, No Dirty Dishes Day, and National Goth Day. Some had ones you could combine like National Nutty Fudge Day, which occurs on Mother’s Day, so if the Mother you’re celebrating likes nutty fudge . . . well, you get the idea.

Star Wars has two celebration days. They are May 4th (may the fourth be with you), and May 21st, National Talk Like Yoda Day, which in translation would be “Today Talk Like Yoda, You Must.”

May 20th was National Be a Millionaire Day, which got me wondering. How does that holiday work? I imagine you have to be a millionaire already, but wouldn’t it be nice if some philanthropist gave away money to support the day’s proposal. That’d be a holiday a lot of people could get behind.

This post is scheduled for May 24th. A day in which I found more than sixteen different celebrations listed, among them are National Asparagus Day, National Brother’s Day, National Mike Day, National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day, National Escargot Day, Scavenger Hunt Day, and Tiara Day, so if you have a brother whose name is Mike and who is an aviation maintenance technician, you could go on a scavenger hunt, while wearing tiara’s, and sharing escargot. Sounds like a pretty good day to me. Now, if only I had a brother named Mike.

But however, you celebrate May; I hope you enjoy its days, one and all.

Hello Jan. What startles me a bit is that 2024 is almost half over. The years keep flying by.
