birthdays, hope, summer break, wishes, writing

Summer Dreams

The last week of June is one of my favorite weeks of the year. The school term ends just in time for my birthday. It’s like a gift all of its own. This week, in the hallways, the question on everyone’s lips is: what are you doing this summer?

Part of me feels it’s out of place to think of birthdays or summer vacations when there is so much death and destruction in the world, but as they are near, I find myself thinking of them.

If wishes came true, with the snap of a finger or a puff of air blowing out a birthday candle, I’d wish for every person to share carefree summer thoughts as I can. To enjoy time outdoors in their backyards or close to the shore, as I plan on doing. To spend time with loved ones, read scads of books from the comfort of a beach chair, and notice the blinking of fireflies and the setting sun tickling the tops of trees in their backyard come the evening.

This summer, I look forward to my freckles multiplying, as they do, no matter the SPF of my sunscreen, and to Portia’s evening walks when the air and the pavement are cooler. I wouldn’t wish freckles on anyone unless they were partial to them, but companionable walks, I’d gift those to everyone.

After a week and a half, my school’s six-week summer session will begin, and on days I’m not teaching, I hope to do a mix of all of the above, along with ample doses of time to write and think. Since writing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, my wish instead would be for everyone to have the freedom to follow their joy.

What carefree summer thoughts would you like to share or wish for?
