Which Series Delivers?

What is your favorite book series? Do you have one? And if you do, do you find that you seek out those favorites, over a challenging read, when life gets too complex?

My favorites are all written by the same prolific writer, Alexander McCall Smith, and yes I definitely seek out characters I can rely on when daily stresses start building, but also when I just want to visit an old friend for a bit of perspective.

I’ve read all of Mr. Smith’s books within his No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, his Isabel Dalhousie series and his Inspector Varg series and am now exploring the 44 Scotland Street series.

The main characters in each of the first three series I mentioned are as follows, Precious Ramotswe, Isabel Dalhousie, and Ulf Varg. Each character is distinctively different. The settings of the stories are similarly different, they range from Botswana, Africa to Edinburgh, Scotland to Malmö, Sweden.

The 44 Scotland Street series stands alone as the only series that doesn’t have a main character who is human. Instead, it has a community of mostly likeable characters who reside in the same building or live within blocks of that address.

With each of his various book series, Alexander McCall Smith never fails to deliver a story that makes me reflect with empathy on the human condition, or encourages me to hold up a philosophical lens when contemplating humanity in general. Its a pleasant way to take a break from reality and gain a little fictional perspective.

Please share your favorite book series. I’d love to hear about what they are and why they’re your favorite.

  1. Hi Jan, great post and I completely agree with you that book series are like comfort food–I’m going back to a place that I know and characters who intrigue me or amuse me. Some of my go-to series are the Jeeves and Bertie Wooster books by PG Wodehouse. I also like going through the mysteries of Dorothy Sayers periodically and retracing the romance between Harriet Vane and Lord Peter Whimsey. And I also love Alexander McCall Smith.

  2. I also liked reading the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, especially Precious! I( think I even saw her in a TV series a while ago.) My own favorite series is Run with the Horsemen by Ferrol Sams that follows a boy from adolescence to his fighting in the military. This series got me hooked on Southern writers writing about Southern characters. The author’s breadth and depth into writing about the main character, somewhat autobiographical, is pure delight.
